Cupping Therapy 101: What It Is and Who It Helps

A practical local guide to cupping therapy, when it fits into massage care, and what to expect at B Well.

People usually ask about cupping after a regular massage has stopped cutting it. They want something that gets into the spot that keeps tightening right back up — the trap, the low back, the IT band that never quite lets go.

What cupping actually does

A silicone or glass cup creates suction on the skin and pulls the tissue up instead of pressing it down. That is the whole trick. It lifts fascia, brings fresh blood into stuck areas, and gives the muscle underneath room to release in a way regular pressure can not always reach.

At B Well, cupping is not for the photo. It is there because some bodies need a different kind of pull than hands alone can give. It shows up most often with deep tissue work and Laura's neuromuscular cupping sessions.

Who tends to benefit most

  • Anyone with a chronically tight neck or shoulders that snap right back after a regular massage
  • Runners, lifters, and Crossfit folks managing repetitive strain in calves, glutes, and IT bands
  • Desk workers whose upper back stays locked from morning to night
  • Clients who feel like a lighter massage never gets to the actual problem
  • People recovering from a sports flare-up who want to keep moving

What about the marks?

You might leave with circular marks. They are not bruises in the painful sense — there is no impact. The discoloration shows where stagnant blood was sitting. It usually fades in three to seven days. Darker marks tend to mean more stuck tissue in that spot, not that the session was rougher.

If you have a wedding, beach trip, or photo shoot in the next week, mention it before we cup. We can pick spots that stay covered or skip cupping that day and use other tools.

How to make a cupping session work for you

  • Drink water before and after — hydration helps the tissue respond and the soreness clear faster
  • Eat a light meal an hour or two ahead, not right before
  • Tell us where the problem actually shows up — driving, sleeping, training — not just where it hurts
  • Plan for a quiet evening if it is your first session; some people feel a little wiped
  • Skip the sauna and an intense workout for 24 hours after to let the tissue settle

When cupping is not the right call

We skip cupping over open skin, fresh sunburn, recent surgical scars, or active rashes. If you are on blood thinners or pregnant, tell us up front — we will adjust or recommend a different service. When in doubt, call before you book and we will sort it out on the phone.
