The hardest part of a first Brazilian wax is usually not the wax. It is not knowing what to expect. Here is the version we wish every first-timer got before they walked in.
Hair length and timing
- Hair needs to be about 1/4 inch long — roughly two to three weeks of growth past a shave
- If you have shaved in the last week, reschedule for the following week — there is not enough to grip
- Try to book 3–5 days after your period ends; skin is least sensitive then
- Avoid the two days right before your period — that is when most clients say it hurt more
- Once you switch from shaving to waxing, every appointment after the first is dramatically easier
The day of your appointment
- Shower and arrive with clean, dry skin — no oils, lotions, or self-tanner
- Skip caffeine and alcohol that morning; both can make skin more reactive
- Take an ibuprofen 30–45 minutes before if you want a little edge taken off (optional)
- Wear loose cotton underwear and loose pants or a skirt to your appointment
- You can leave your top on. You only undress from the waist down — many people are surprised by that.
What actually happens in the room
The esthetician steps out, you change, and there is a clean cover sheet. She comes back, talks you through it, and starts with a small section so you know what the sensation feels like. She works in small strips, applies pressure right after each pull, and keeps checking in.
The whole service usually runs 20–30 minutes. The actual waxing portion is faster than people expect — the discomfort is sharp but very short, and your skin calms down quickly between pulls.
Aftercare for the first 24–48 hours
- No hot tubs, saunas, sweaty workouts, or sex for 24 hours — pores are open
- Skip tight jeans and synthetic leggings for the rest of the day; loose cotton is better
- Cool shower that night, not hot — and pat dry, do not rub
- A fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe gel the next morning helps redness clear faster
- Start gently exfoliating around day 3 (a soft washcloth works) to prevent ingrowns
How often to come back
Every 4–6 weeks is the standard. The hair grows back finer and patchier each time, and the wax keeps getting easier. Skip more than 8 weeks and the cycle resets — not the end of the world, just back to a longer service.
